You have the poor always with you

You have the poor always with you

“For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.” (KJV Matthew 26:11)

When Jesus tells his disciples that they will always have the poor among them, is this a concession that the problem of poverty is something that just isn’t going away? Or is there something else to be learned in that statement?

In another place it is said, “And the Lord called his people Zion, because they were of one heart and one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; and there was no poor among them.” (LDS Moses 7:18)

Among one group of people the Lord says “ye have the poor always with you”, but another group of people he called Zion because “there was no poor among them”.

What is the difference between these two groups? Where are we at now? How does being of one heart and one mind, living righteously contribute to there being no poor among that group of people?
