”Behold, it came to pass on the morrow that the multitude gathered themselves together, and they both saw and heard these children; yea, even babes did open their mouths and utter marvelous things. And the things which they did utter were forbidden, that there should not any man write them.” (LDS 3 Nephi 26:16)
Jesus came to the Nephites and ministered to them for three consecutive days. We have a detailed account of what happened on the first day. We have a partial account of what happened on the second day. We have almost nothing of what happened on the third day. The only thing we do have is the description above about their children. This means that the only thing we know happened on each of the three consecutive days, is that each day had a miraculous manifestation involving their children. What should we learn from this?
When Jesus looked upon an audience of adults, do you know what he saw? He saw doubt, skepticism, criticism, pretentiousness, some who would be offended or would turn away. There were barriers of every kind. Could he deal with that? Yes. But when he was in an audience of children, do you know what he saw? He saw home. He saw those who made him feel comfortable. It was like being around close friends and family who love you and you can just be yourself around, without any barriers. He saw those who are open and believing. He saw gentleness, meekness and genuine love. He saw a piece of heaven.
What allowed the adults to advance and to be taught greater things was the presence of children. It was the children that made it a comfortable environment where Jesus could relax and teach and do so much more than he could ever do with adults. The adults got to see what Jesus could do and what could be possible for them, by watching Jesus among their children. They learned from their children, how they should act and behave. They learned how to make Jesus more comfortable and open. By watching them, they learned how to listen and believe. It was the children who set an example that the adults could follow and then receive greater knowledge and greater miracles themselves. They learned what kind of people they ought to be and the kind of person that Jesus is by watching him with their children.
Children have the kingdom of heaven, even if they don’t know it. Whoever can become as one of these little children will see greater things than they ever could by holding onto their skepticism or demanding that all of their doubts must first be addressed before they will believe. Doubt not, but be believing. Become as a little child and you will see and experience the greater things that are withheld because of doubt and unbelief.
